Deputy FM Gerontopoulos carries out visit to Chicago. -MFA

On Friday, 28 March, Deputy Foreign Minister Kyriakos Gerontopoulos began his four-day visit to the United States in Chicago, where he visited the Hellenic American Academy, was informed by teachers and administrators regarding the schools functioning, talked to pupils, and attended a theatrical performance.

Mr. Gerontopoulos then attended a Greek flag-raising ceremony at Daley Plaza and laid a wreath, in the presence of Greek Olympians who travelled from Greece, at the invitation of the Greek community of Chicago, for the events marking Greek Independence Day.

Mr. Gerontopoulos also met with Metropolitan Iakovos of Chicago, at the seat of the Holy Metropolitan. He thanked His Eminence for the important pastoral work the Church has always carried out in the region and discussed with him issues concerning Orthodoxy and Hellenism.

Mr. Gerontopoulos then visited the Hellenic Museum in Greek Town, where photographs and objects related to Greek immigration to the U.S. are exhibited.

Mr. Gerontopoulos also met at the Consular Residence with representatives of the Greek American community of Chicago, regarding issues and problems of the Greek American Community, and briefed them on developments in Greece and on matters pertaining to Greeks Abroad.

On Saturday, 29 March, Mr. Gerontopoulos will be in New York, on the second leg of his visit to the U.S.
