Ukraine On Terror Alert Amid Explosion Threats

KIEV, February 9 (RIA Novosti) – Ukrainian security agents are on high alert following reports of planned explosions in the country that could cause mass casualties, the national security service said Sunday.

A warning has been issued concerning high-risk facilities across Ukraine, including nuclear and hydro power plants, international airports, railway stations and bus stations, cross-country pipelines and weapons storage facilities.

These measures have been made public and aim at preventing threats to the life and health of Ukrainians, the SBU said in a statement on its website. The service also confirmed a hijack attempt on a plane en route to Turkey from Kharkiv on February 7.

A passenger aboard a Pegasus Airlines flight attempted to hijack the plane by claiming there was a bomb aboard and demanded to go to the Olympic city of Sochi, officials and media reports said. The flight landed safely in Istanbul, its original destination, despite the ordeal.

Ukraine’s Interior Ministry said three people were injured Saturday in downtown Kiev, the scene of mass anti-government protests since November. One person was reportedly hit by a guard, while two others were attacked by unknown assailants in separate incidents.

The city saw worse clashes between rioters and police for several days last month following the hasty passage of draconian laws that strictly curbed the right to protest. Those laws were later repealed.

  1. EU Foreign ministers to discuss situation in Kiev: Ukraine's accession to EU not on agenda....

The situation in Ukraine will once again be the main subject of discussion at a meeting of the Foreign ministers of 27 European Union (EU) countries. On Monday, the ministers are to consider a complicatrd question: what Brussels can promise to Kiev in exchange for an Association Agreement which was never concluded, and free trade that would open the republic's domestic market to the commodities of European producers.

The question of offering to Ukraine the prospect of EU full membership is not on the agenda, according to data available from diplomatic sources in a number of missions of leading EU countries.

The ministers will not consider the possibility of applying sanctions against Ukrainian officials for fear of setting Kiev against cooperation with Brussels.

The sanctions issue has not been even put on the agenda despite demands from individual members of the Europarliament.

The ministers are to consider two documents dedicated to the pursuance of a more active policy with regard to Ukraine. This also refers to Sweden's initiative under the title of "20 Theses on Eastern Partnership", which has been supported by 12 EU countries. According to excerpts from the document, its contents are not recolutionary.

Sweden suggests "enhancing" the attractiveness of Europe's Eastern Partnership policy resultant of developing programmes for visa-free exchanges, including those of students, and stepping up efforts under programmes of interparliamenary contacts and civil society to promote the integration of as large number of citizens of key Eastern Partnership countries as possible into European cultural space.

Sweden also suggests speeding up the signing of Association Agreements with Georgia and Moldova..................http://voiceofrussia.com/news/2014_02_10/EU-Foreign-ministers-to-discuss-situation-in-Kiev-Ukraines-accession-to-EU-not-on-agenda-7328/
