Second round of Geneva II concludes without tangible results: Brahimi

GENEVA, Feb. 15 (Xinhua) -- The second round negotiations of the Geneva II international conference on Syria concluded on Saturday noon without achieving tangible results, said UN-Arab League Special Envoy to Syria Lakhdar Brahimi.

Brahimi said a proposed agenda for the next round of talks was agreed between delegates of the Syrian government and the opposition, but did not reveal the exact date.

Addressing a press conference in the wake of the "laborious" last session held Saturday morning, he said an agenda for the next round of "when it does take place" was accepted by both sides.

During a new round of talks, the first day will be reserved for discussions over fighting against violence and terrorism, and the second day would be about the transitional governing body, according to Brahimi.

  1. Syria's top negotiator accuses US, Israel of undermining Geneva peace talks....

Syria's government on Saturday has accused Israel and the US for undermining UN-brokered peace talks and blamed the opposition's refusal to settle the issue of "terrorism" for the deadlock. "Everybody is trying his best to undermine the whole process, either Israel or unfortunately the Americans, or even the sponsors of the so-called coalition and the opposition," Syria's top negotiator Bashar Jaafari told reporters after a second round of talks wrapped up fruitlessly.

Jaafari, who is also Syria's ambassador to the United Nations headquarters in New York, pointed to President Barack Obama's pledge Friday to take unspecified "intermediate steps" to pressure official Damascus.

He also accused Washington of pushing the Syrian rebels to "escalate militarily" notably by stepping up fighting on the country's southern border with Jordan.

"Those people are not really committed towards guaranteeing the success of the Geneva conference. On the contrary, there was no goodwill at all," Jaafari said..............http://voiceofrussia.com/news/2014_02_15/Syrias-top-negotiator-accuses-US-Israel-of-undermining-Geneva-peace-talks-4836/

  2. Germany calls for UN resolution on Syria...

Germany’s Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier has strongly criticized the Assad regime on Sunday for the lack of progress in the second round of peace talks in Geneva, which ended on Saturday.

Steinmeier also urged U.N. Security Council members to act now for a humanitarian resolution on Syria.

“The latest round of Syria talks also ended without reaching any results, showing us once again that Assad and his folks are not interested in serious negotiations but only want to secure their power,” Steinmeier said in a written statement on Sunday.

“The sufferings of the Syrians and the future of the country apparently plays no role in the process,” he stressed.

German Foreign Minister has called for a prompt action by the UN Security Council members to ease the suffering of the Syrian people.

“It is more urgent than ever for the UN Security Council to act and approve now a resolution on the humanitarian situation in Syria, which would put an end to the humanitarian war crimes,” Steinmeier said.
