Ukraine may issue state of emergency if protesters don't leave Justice Ministry ...

 -
The building of Justice Ministry has been occupied by protesters, RT reports. Local media reported that no one was hurt during the seizure of the building of the Justice Ministry in central Kiev. Following the incident, political organization Obchee Delo claimed responsibility, posting a message on their Facebook profile.

"At 22:38 security in the building called in an attempted seizure of the building. Information was confirmed, the building remains seized,” police said, according to Unian news agency.

Ukrainian Justice Minister Elena Lukash has said she will ask the National Security and Defense Council to introduce a state of emergency if rioters do not leave the ministry building.

"If the protesters do not leave the Justice Ministry building in half an hour I will ask the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine to impose the state of emergency,” she told Inter TV channel.

Lukash said the ministry building was captured just when the last amendments were being made to the law “On Changes to the Constitution of Ukraine” in order to return to the 2004 text of the constitution.

UDAR party leader Vitaly Klitschko has entered the building, Interfax reported.

According to AFP, the group entered the building without any resistance and is currently building a system of barricades just outside the building. Common Cause is reportedly the same group that earlier occupied the Energy and Agricultural Ministries.

  1. Pro-Western Ukrainian opposition stokes up civil war....

Right-wing, pro-Western opposition forces in Ukraine pushed the country one step closer to all-out civil war yesterday, rejecting President Viktor Yanukovych’s proposed concessions and demanding that he step down. The opposition aims to install a far-right administration pledged to implement the austerity policies of the European Union (EU) and International Monetary Fund.

Protesters clashed with riot police again yesterday in Kyiv and occupied a cultural center near the epicenter of the protests, Independence Square, after a pitched battle with security forces. Protesters have reportedly gained complete or partial control of at least six buildings in central Kyiv: Kyiv City Hall, the Trade Unions Building, the October Palace, the Ukraina Hotel, the Agriculture Ministry, and the Ukrainian House.

On Saturday, President Viktor Yanukovych had declared that he was prepared to make a number of concessions, following months of protests and escalating repression and the passage of an anti-democratic anti-protest law. Yanukovych proposed to appoint two leaders of the opposition, Arseniy Yatsenyuk and Vitali Klitschko, to the posts of prime minister and deputy prime minister respectively.

Yatsenyuk is a leader of the Batkivshchyna (Homeland) party, led by the imprisoned oligarch Julia Tymoshenko. A former head of the National Bank of Ukraine and foreign minister under the previous President Viktor Yushchenko, he is a firm advocate of the austerity policies demanded by the EU and IMF.

Former boxer Vitali Klitschko is the head of the Ukrainian Democratic Alliance—a creation of German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and its think tank, the Konrad Adenauer Foundation........................http://www.wsws.org/en/articles/2014/01/27/ukra-j27.html

  2. Violence on part of Ukrainian protestors unacceptable - Russian diplomat ...

The actions by "fighters for human rights" in Ukraine who are pelting police officers with Molotov cocktails and beating other citizens are unacceptable and require relevant assessment by international organizations, the Russian Foreign Ministry's Commissioner for Human Rights, Democracy and the Rule of Law Konstantin Dolgov said, the Voice of Russia correspondent Ksenya Melnikova reports.

"To fight for human rights by pelting representatives of law enforcement agencies with Molotov cocktails, by storming administrative buildings, by beating your fellow citizens, by causing violence in the streets of your own town - if that is a method of defending human rights, then this method must be assessed accordingly by the international community and international human rights groups," he said at a briefing on Monday.

"Such a method is absolutely unacceptable," the diplomat said.

  3. Events in Ukraine pose threat to existence of country's independence - Party of Regions ....

The Party of Regions has issued a statement saying it believes the recent events in Ukraine pose a threat to the existence of an independent Ukraine and demands that Ukrainian Prosecutor General Viktor Pshonka conduct an immediate investigation into the activities by so-called people's radas.

"The attempts made by opposition leaders Arseniy Yatsenyuk, Vitaly Klitschko, and Oleh Tyagnibok to disassociate themselves from the actions taken by their supporters and the seizures of public administration bodies in the regions are clumsy attempts to avoid political, moral, and criminal responsibility for these actions. The people's rada they headed up on January 22 sends directives to the regions ordering self-proclaimed radas and committees to seize power," the Party of Regions press service said in its statement, which was released on Monday.

The Party of Regions believes that "the fascist youths' in the streets of Ukrainian cities are turning the country into a battlefield.

"The very existence of the independent Ukraine is in jeopardy now. Trying to carry out a coup, which will divide the country, they are not thinking about the life and future of millions of peaceful citizens who are not involved in this chaos," the statement says.

The Party of Regions is calling on all reasonable people and all political and public organizations to "manifest their civil stance and stand up to defend the constitutional system."

The party also asked the Ukrainian prosecutor general to "urgently conduct an investigation into the anti-constitutional actions taken by the so-called people's radas, give a legal evaluation, and prosecute the culprits in accordance with the legislation of Ukraine."

Klitschko fails to convince protesters to free Ukraine's Justice Ministry building

Leader of the opposition party Ukrainian Democratic Alliance for Reform (UDAR) Vitaly Klitschko has failed to convince protesters to free the building of Ukraine's Justice Ministry, the party’s headquarters said.

"Radical members of the movement 'Spilna Sprava' (Common Cause) have ignored Klitschko's strong requests and arguments to free the ministry’s building at Gorodetsky Street," the headquarters reported.

  6. Ukrainian government gets information on extremist attacks on pipelines, key facilities...

KIEV, January 27. /ITAR-TASS/. The Ukrainian government has information on extremist attacks on laying mines at gas pipelines and key facilities, Foreign Minister Leonid Kozhara said.

However, the minister said the government “is not planning to impose a state of emergency”.

“Information says attacks can be made on the Central Post Office and on the building of Kiev regional state administration where the central election commission is headquartered. This would be very dangerous,” he said.

“Reports on gas pipelines mining and on the events at two Ukrainian nuclear power plants are rather fearsome. The government is ready to respond to them,” Kozhara said.
