Pro-Kurdish party asks UN to invite Kurdish council to Geneva II

Turkey's pro-Kurdish Peace and Democracy Party (BDP) sent a letter on Friday to United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon asking that the Kurdish Supreme Council -- an organization composed of Kurds of Syria, Iraq and Turkey -- be invited to an international peace conference on the Syrian crisis scheduled for later this month in Montreux.
The English letter expressed BDP's concerns and suggestions regarding the ongoing Syrian civil war and the so-called "Geneva II" Conference set for January 22.

"It is well known that multi-lateral conflicts between opposition groups in Syria give rise to ever increasing instability and irreparable polarization among Syrian peoples. Up till now, Arabs, Kurds, Syriacs, Druzes, Alawites, Sunnis, Christians and many identities in Syria had no chance to politically represent themselves freely. No idea or culture or lifestyle could find an opportunity to develop during the Baas Regime," said the letter.
It was noted that fundamentalist groups negatively redirected Syria's legitimate and political will.
"We consider that the radical groups, especially the Al-Qaida-linked ones, have an important responsibility in the deepening of the crisis in Syria. Therefore, we request you to express your sensitivity on this issue and take action to prevent radicalism and fundamentalism both in Syria and in the Middle East," said the letter carrying the signature of BDP leader Selahattin Demirtas.
The letter underlined that while conflicts are ever increasing in Syria, its predominantly Kurdish region had gained relative stability with the Kurdish Supreme Council's support.
The letter also noted that the Kurdish Supreme Council is a "third way" against the Assad regime and fundamentalist and radical groups in Syria, and that the BDP fully supports the Kurdish Supreme Council in representing Syria's Kurds at Geneva II.
