EU Lawmakers Pass Ukraine Resolution, Prompting Russian Ire

MOSCOW/STRASBOURG, January 30 (RIA Novosti) – An outspoken Russian lawmaker has labeled a resolution by Council of Europe lawmakers on unrest in Ukraine as an attempt to damage Russia.
The Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, a forum that brings together parliamentarians from 47 members states across the continent, passed a resolution Thursday during an emergency debate over Ukraine's political crisis and the government’s crackdown on opposition protests.
The resolution asserts that statements by Ukrainian officials indicated that the decision not to sign an association agreement with the EU in November was influenced by pressure applied by Russia.

Alexei Pushkov, a lawmaker with Russia’s lower house of parliament and the head of his country’s delegation to PACE, criticized the resolution backed by deputies from the EU as an undisguised assault on Russia.
“In the PACE resolution on Ukraine, the EU representatives are trying again to strike a blow to Russia…,” Pushkov wrote on his Twitter account Thursday.

EU lawmakers refrained Thursday from stripping the Ukrainian delegation of its vote, but said Thursday that the option would be kept open for April’s agenda if the authorities used force against protesters or violated their rights in other ways.

Pushkov said the PACE resolution reflected double standards for criticizing Ukraine over the violent clampdown on anti-government demonstrators, while EU authorities take similar measures against protests in their own countries.

Ukraine's decision to distance itself from the EU in order to seek closer ties with Russia sparked large-scale protests in Kiev and other parts of Ukraine that have in some parts descended into violent clashes between demonstrators and police. The ongoing protests prompted the government to resign earlier this week.

  1. Kerry to meet Ukraine protest leaders in Munich...

US Secretary of State John Kerry will meet Ukrainian opposition figures for talks on Friday on the sidelines of a security conference in Munich, a senior State Department official said.

Washington has welcomed talks in recent days between President Viktor Yanukovich and the opposition to end two months of protests sparked by Yanukovich’s decision to reject an EU trade deal in favour of closer ties and a financial bailout from Russia.

Kerry will meet with Arseny Yatsenyuk, a former economy minister and leader of the party of jailed former prime minister Yulia Tymoshenko; former boxing champion-turned-politician Vitaly Klitschko, who leads the Udar (Punch) party; Petro Poroshenko, a member of parliament; and Ukrainian pop star Ruslana Lyzhychko.

Yanukovich and opposition leaders agreed in talks on Monday to repeal recently passed anti-protest laws, a key demand of the opposition. The government also said that prisoners detained by police in the months of unrest should be granted amnesty, although the proposal was rejected by the opposition after Yanukovich made it conditional on protesters relinquishing control of the buildings they have occupied in Kiev and elsewhere.

In another concession to protester demands, Prime Minister Mykola Azarov resigned on Tuesday amid calls by the opposition for him to step down.

Ukraine’s presidency announced on Thursday that Yanukovich had taken ill. “The president of Ukraine has been officially registered as sick, with an acute respiratory ailment and a high temperature,” a statement on the presidential website said.

The State Department official said the US was “cautiously optimistic” about the negotiations, adding that the talks would focus on ways to restore calm and relaunch the political process in Ukraine, including plans to form a new government...................http://www.france24.com/en/20140131-kerry-meet-ukraine-protest-leaders-munich/
