Commissioner Fule demands Skopje to meet its obligations. - FYROM news

European Commission demands results from authorities in Skopje about the reforms, the electoral code, judicial system and freedom of media.

This was the request put forward by the EU Enlargement Commissioner, Stefan Fule in a meeting held in his office in Brussels with the Deputy Prime Minister for European Integration of FYROM, Fatmir Besimi and Foreign Minister Nikola Popovski.

After the meeting, Euro commissioner’s Fule press office issued a press statement informing that the focus of the meeting was the implementation of last year’s political accord between political parties in order to strengthen political dialogue and overcome disputes and political tensions, implementation of priority reforms especially in the domain of the freedom of media, independence of the judicial system and electoral code.


“Fule and the two ministers agreed on continuing the discussions aimed at strengthening dialogue prior to the release of the next progress report in order for the country to move forward in the path of EU integration”, states the press statement of Euro commissioner’s Fule office.

Deputy prime minister Besimi said the talks with Euro commissioner Fule in Brussels focused on the achievements made so far by Skopje’s authorities in the aspect of European integrations and the fulfillment of recommendations issued by EU.

“This meeting also mentioned the agreement reached about the changes in the Electoral Code, consensually approved by the biggest political parties in the country. We also talked about the changes in the law on media and ongoing dialogue with journalists, along with the changes in the laws on public administration. Part of the talks were also the priorities and dynamic of senior level talks”, declared Deputy Prime Minister for European Integration, Fatmir Besimi.

Foreign Minister, Nikola Popovski said that the topics that were discussed involved the steps that must be taken in the period up to the next progress report and how this period can be best exploited.

“Our goal is to use this period the same as if we were in the phase of negotiations. I believe that this discussion was positive in order to hear everyone’s perspective on those reforms which are important in the process of negotiations”, said minister Poposki.

The two ministers have also met with the head of the EU Enlargement Directorate, Christian Danielson and the rapporteur on FYROM at the European Parliament, Richard Howitt. According to them, these meetings discussed topics which relate to the fulfillment of the criteria for accession and the reforms. /ibna/
