The United States will keep its two Patriot missile batteries in Turkey for up to another year in response to a request from Ankara.
The US Pentagon announced its decision on Monday after a meeting between Turkish foreign minister Ahmet Davutoglu and US Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel. The extended deployment will help bolster Turkey’s air defenses as the civil war in neighboring Syria continues to rage.
The Turkish minister also met with his US counterpart John Kerry on Monday and voiced Turkey’s concern about border security. Meanwhile during a joint press conference, Kerry expressed his confidence in the chemical disarmament process in Syria.

Timely intervention into a crisis necessary: Turkish President...
ReplyDeleteIf timely and proper intervention into a crisis does not happen, situations like Syria can repeat, Turkish President Abdullah Gul warned Wednesday.
“As we experienced in Syria, a conflict within a state affects not only that state, but the region as a whole,” Gul said in the opening speech of the Fifth Atlantic Council in Istanbul.
The Turkish President stressed the danger of the notion that a crisis could be postponed, as it could trigger bigger crises.
He added that a stability problem within a state could affect the economic equilibrium of the region and world.
