  1. Greek jets ‘harassed’ Turkish military trainer aircraft over the Aegean Sea: General Staff...

Greek F-16 jets harassed Turkish military trainer aircrafts by putting them under radar-lock while they were flying over the Aegean Sea, the Turkish General Staff said in a statement on their website Nov. 6.

“The Turkish Air Force’s F-4E/2020 planes performed training flights in Aegean international airspace between the Icraia and Samos islands. The Greek F-16 planes that took off from the airbase on Skyros island harassed [the Turkish planes] by maintaining the radar locks for four minutes [for each plane],” the statement said.

Radar lock means that the Greek military planes’ missiles were fixed on the Turkish aircraft during their flight over the Aegean.

The statement is misleading between Icaria and Samos are Fourni islands at 10km and 8 km respectively. Anyone who can read google maps may see this. So what were the TAF jets doing there? Probably their old cold war style exercises like the 100 they conduct over greek islands each year. What would turkish public say if if GAF jets would over fly the turkish coast?

They are probably trying to see if there are still any competent pilots left in the Turkish Air Force.

The sad fact is the this skyros island belongs to Turkey. Barbarossa fought for this island and has no desire to see it under greek control.

This is an act of War. Turkey should've responded by sending it's airforce in to take out the aggresors.

There is no international air space between Samos and Ikaria islands as the distance between them is only 10 nautical miles and there is also Fournoi island amongst them (see any map).Greek jets then acted in accordance with international law concerning foreign aircraft overflying greek airspace.

You do realize of course that the Greek newspapers inform Greeks about our warplanes that fly over their lands... NOT a matter of point of view. This is a matter of international maritime law and every single bilateral treaty that has been signed between us and the greeks. Hague is the ultimate solution.

It is obvious Greece has been looking for trouble. I think Turkey should embark on overwhelming Greeks by Operation Atilla II in agean sea latest by 20 July 2014.

  3. Greece uses Patriots to put four Turkish F-4’s under radar-lock: General Staff....

Greek Patriot air defense units “harassed” four Turkish F-4 military aircrafts by putting them under radar-lock while they were flying in international airspace over the Aegean Sea, the Turkish General Staff said in a statement on their website Dec. 24.

Military sources told daily Hürriyet the Greek military used Patriots defense units for the first time against Turkish military aircraft, as they previously resorted to military planes.

“Four Turkish Air Force’s F-4E/2020 planes performing training flights in the Aegean international airspace at the southwest of the Icaria island were harassed by Greece’s Patriot air missile systems by putting them under radar-lock for 15 seconds twice at 3:20 p.m.,” the statement said.

The General Staff has informed Turkish Foreign Ministry regarding the incident, the statement added.

The Greek press had previously criticized the unnecessary cost of the military dogfight between the two countries.

  4. Greek air defense puts Turkish fighters under radar lock ....

Turkish jet fighters were harassed by the Greek military over the Aegean when the neighboring country's Patriot air defense system put the Turkish aircraft under radar lock, the military has announced.

Four F4-E/2020 Phantoms were put under radar lock by Greece's Patriot missile defense system twice, for 15 seconds each time, at 3:20 p.m. Turkish time on Dec. 23, the military said in a statement on Wednesday. The jet fighters were on a training flight in international waters off Greece's Ikaria Island in the Aegean, said the military.

Media reports quoted military sources as saying that this was the first time Turkish military aircraft were threatened by Greece's long-range missile defense system. The military has also reportedly notified the Foreign Ministry about the incident.

Turkish and Greek warplanes have engaged in dogfights over the Aegean many times in the past but Greece has never activated its missile defense system against Turkish aircraft.

Turkey and Greece are at odds over boundaries of their airspace due to a long-running territorial dispute over the Aegean.
