  1. Syria rebels still in Christian town Maalula: security....

DAMASCUS: Syrian rebels were still positioned in a historic Christian town near Damascus on Wednesday, a day after they announced they were ready to withdraw, a security source told AFP.

"The army has not yet retaken Maalula. The battles are raging on, but (the army) is making progress," the source said on condition of anonymity.

"The rebels still hold some pockets of resistance inside Maalula and its surroundings," the source added.

Rebels announced on Tuesday they would withdraw from Maalula, but that their withdrawal was "conditional" on pro-regime forces not taking their place.

"The army and its shabiha (militias) must not enter into the town," a spokesman for the rebels said via an online video statement.

"To ensure no blood is spilt and that the properties of the people of Maalula are kept safe, the Free Syrian Army announces that the town of Maalula will be kept out of the struggle between the FSA and the regime army," the spokesman said.

On Sunday, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights and residents said rebel forces, including jihadists linked to Al-Qaeda, had overrun Maalula.

The town, home to about 5,000 people, is strategically important for rebels, who are trying to tighten their grip around Damascus and already have bases all around the capital.

Civilians started fleeing the town nearly a week ago, fearing an imminent escalation.

Picturesque Maalula, nestled under a large cliff, is considered a symbol of the Christian presence in Syria.

  3. Jihadists Force Syria Christian ’to Convert at Gunpoint’...

Jihadists who overran Syria's ancient town of Ma'loula last week disparaged Christians as "Crusaders" and forced at least one person to convert to Islam at gunpoint, say residents who fled the town.

Many of Ma'loula people left after a first militant assault knocked out an army checkpoint at the entrance to the strategic town on September 4. Some went to a nearby village and others to Damascus, about 55 kilometers (34 miles) to the south.

One of them, Marie, was still frightened as she spoke of that day.

"They arrived in our town at dawn... and shouted 'We are from the Al-Nusra Front and have come to make lives miserable for the Crusaders," an Islamist term for Christians, Marie said in Damascus, where she and hundreds of others attended the burial Tuesday of three Christian fighters who belong to the public committees.

Ma'loula is one of the most renowned Christian towns in Syria, and many of its inhabitants speak Aramaic, the language of Jesus.

Home to around 5,000 people, it is strategically important for rebels, who are trying to tighten their grip around the capital.

Security sources stress that the Syrian militants still deploy in Ma'loula, although the militants had announced yesterday that they would withdraw from the town in case the Syrian army did not return to it.

Syrian militants were still positioned in a historic Christian town near Damascus on Wednesday, a day after they announced they were ready to withdraw, a security source told Agence France Presse.

"The army has not yet retaken Ma'loula. The battles are raging on, but (the army) is making progress," the source said.

"The insurgents till hold some positions inside Ma'loula and its surroundings," the source added.

The militant groups announced on Tuesday they would withdraw from Ma'loula, but that this was "conditional" on army troops not taking their place.

The Syrian insurgents had invaded Ma'loula last week, targeting the civilians and the churches before the Syrian army started his campaign to regain the peaceful town.

  4. 300-400 Al Nusra militants killed by Syrian government forces near Maaloula...

MAALOULA, Syria, September 15 (Itar-Tass) - The Syrian government troops on Sunday continued an operation to force Al Nusra militants from the Christian area of Syria - Maaloula - where the Monastery of Equal-to-the-Apostles St. Thekla (disciple of Apostle Paul) is located.

On Saturday, the Syrian army took the city under its control but militants continued to shell the government forces from a gorge. Early on Sunday, about 100 gunmen made an attempt to get into a neighnouring village but were repelled by the government troops and killed. The rest of the militants tried to break out of the gorge from the other side, offering a battle to the government forces.

An Itar-Tass correspondent reported from the site that Al Nusra militants had knocked out a tank of the government forces. One of its crew members was killed, two others were taken to hospital in critical condition.

Syrian army helicopters periodically deliver air strikes at groups of militants. A fighter joined the operation in the evening.

A top-ranking Syrian army officer told Itar-Tass that the government forces on Sunday alone had killed from 300 to 400 terrorists. However, judging by the flow of ambulance car rushing for the site of fighting, there are losses among the Syrian army as well. The officer vowed that all the militants would be forced out of the city in a couple of days and journalists would be able to reach the Christian shrines in that city. This week, Russian journalists made three attempts to get to the Monastery of Equal-to-the-Apostles St. Thekla but each time they had to retreat because of militant attacks.
