  • Makaza, Bulgaria-Greece Border Point, Open Again 68 Years Later.

Sixty-eight years after traffic at Makaza pass on the Bulgarian-Greek border came to a halt, the new border check point was officially opened on Monday, September 9.

The ribbon-cutting ceremony started at 11 am and was attended by the district governors of Kardzhali and East Macedonia and Thrace.

However, the official inauguration ceremony will take place at a later stage and will be attended by the Prime Ministers of Bulgaria and Greece.

There will be joint control at the Makaza border crossing, with Bulgarian and Greek border police officers working shifts.

The crossing can be used by vehicles weighting less than 3.5 metric tons, which was Greece's request. Athens insisted that it is open only for cars and buses, while Sofia asked that heavy long vehicles, up to 5 tons, were also allowed to pass through.

It is expected that the crossing will boost tourist trips between Bulgaria and Greece, the development of border regions in both countries, and will significantly alleviate traffic at the other border crossing points on the Bulgarian-Greek border.

  1. Bulgaria opens new road to border checkpoint with Greece...

Bulgaria’s Regional Development Minister Dessislava Terzieva officially unveiled the new road stretch between Kurdjali and Podkova in southeastern Bulgaria on February 4, meant to offer a shorter and improved route to the Makaza-Komotini border checkpoint with Greece.

The 24km road stretch will shorten the route by 15km, the regional development ministry said. Additionally, the project included the modernisation of an eight-kilometre road stretch between Kurdjali and Djebel.

However, the opening came following a three-month delay, caused by work to reinforce a bridge and an area with a high risk of landslides. The additional work raised the costs of the project from 32 million leva (about 16.4 million euro) to 54 million leva (27.6 million euro), Bulgarian news website Mediapool.bg reported.

The new road stretch is expected to lead to an increase in heavy cargo traffic, but lorry drivers will have to wait some time still for the final piece of the puzzle – the ring-road around the town of Kurdjali, which will divert heavy traffic that currently is forced to pass through the town centre..................http://sofiaglobe.com/2014/02/04/bulgaria-opens-new-road-to-border-checkpoint-with-greece/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=bulgaria-opens-new-road-to-border-checkpoint-with-greece
