Η μεγαλύτερη κινητοποίηση ρωσικών πολεμικών στη Μεσόγειο από τον καιρό της Σοβιετικής Ενωσης είναι σε εξέλιξη, καθώς συνεχίζεται η διπλωματική μάχη για τη Συρία.
Ο Guardian σημειώνει ότι το πυραυλοφόρο πολεμικό, που διέσχισε τα στενά του Βοσπόρου στην Κωνσταντινούπολη υπό τη συνοδεία πλοίου της τουρκικής ακτοφυλακής, θεωρείται «φονέας αεροπλανοφόρων» λόγω των ειδικών πυραύλων που διαθέτει. Κύριο στοιχείο του οπλισμού του είναι οι πύραυλοι επιφανείας-επιφανείας Zvezda, που έχουν σχεδιαστεί για πλήγματα σε μεγάλα πολεμικά σκάφη.
Το ρωσικό ειδησεογραφικό πρακτορείο Interfax είχε μεταδώσει στις αρχές Σεπτεμβρίου ότι το Σμετλίβι θα κατευθυνθεί στην ανατολική Μεσόγειο, δηλαδή κοντά στις συριακές ακτές όπου βρίσκονται ήδη αρκετά ρωσικά πολεμικά πλοία κι ενώ παραμένει η απειλή της αμερικανικής επιχείρησης κατά του συριακού καθεστώτος και συμμάχου της Μόσχας.
Το αντιτορπιλικό που ανήκει στο ρωσικό στόλο της Μαύρης Θάλασσας αρχικά αναμενόταν να μεταβεί στο Πράσινο Ακρωτήρι, ωστόσο άλλαξε κατεύθυνση προς την ανατολική Μεσόγειο, σύμφωνα με το Interfax.
Η Ρωσία, της οποίας τα πολεμικά πλοία διατήρησαν μια παρουσία στην ανατολική Μεσόγειο από την έναρξη της κρίσης στη Συρίας, έστειλε τις τελευταίες ημέρες αρκετές ακόμη φρεγάτες στην περιοχή.
Τρία ρωσικά πολεμικά πλοία —το πλοίο ηλεκτρονικού πολέμου SSV-201 Πριαζόβιε και τα μεγάλα αποβατικά Μινσκ και Νόβατσερκασκ είχαν ήδη διασχίσει τον Βόσπορο στις 5 Σεπτεμβρίου με προορισμό αυτή την περιοχή της Μεσογείου.
Ρωσική στρατιωτική πηγή είχε υπογραμμίσει την περασμένη εβδομάδα ότι η ενίσχυση της ναυτικής αυτής δύναμης αυτής θα επιτρέψει στη Ρωσία να "είναι σε θέση να αντιδράσει" ανάλογα με την εξέλιξη της κατάστασης στη Συρία, ενώ η προοπτική της αμερικανικής επίθεσης προκαλεί την έντονη αντίδραση της Μόσχας.
Ο Σεργκέι Ιβανόφ, προσωπάρχης του Κρεμλίνου και στενός συνεργάτης του προέδρου Βλαντίμιρ Πούτιν και πρώην υπουργός Άμυνας, είχε διευκρινίσει ωστόσο ότι η πρώτη αποστολή των πλοίων αυτών ήταν να παραλάβουν πολλούς ρώσους πολίτες που ζουν στη Συρία.

Russian missile destroyer crosses Bosphorus en route to Mediterranean...
ReplyDeleteA Russian warship crossed the Bosphorus Strait in Istanbul en route to the eastern Mediterranean near the Syrian coast earlier Friday morning in response to military tensions and build up of Western naval forces, local media Hurriyet Daily News reported on its website.
Smetlivy, a Kashin-class guided missile destroyer, is the fourth Russian warship traversed the Bosphorus, said the report.
Three other Russian warships passed through the Bosphorus on Sept. 5. The SSV-201 intelligence ship Priazovye, accompanied by the two landing ships Minsk and Novocherkassk, passed through the Bosphorus, it added.
The Russian Navy intends to build its presence in the Mediterranean Sea - particularly in the area close to Syrian shores - to up to 10 battleships, announced Admiral of the Fleet Viktor Chirkov.
"Russia will be building up its Mediterranean fleet until it is deemed sufficient to perform the task set," Chirkov was quoted by Russian TV as saying on Friday.
Russia began military build-up in the Mediterranean in 2012, and starting from December last year the Navy established a constant presence in the eastern part of the Mediterranean Sea.

ReplyDeleteST. PETERSBURG, September 13 (Itar-Tass) - Russia’s naval group in the Mediterranean will be reinforced to the limits allowing to avert the slightest threat to the state borders and security, Commander-in-Chief of the Russian Navy Admiral Viktor Chirkov stated on Friday.
“Russia will build up its grouping in the Mediterranean to the self-sufficiency limit for fulfilling the set tasks. The tasks are totally clear - to avert the slightest threat to the borders and security of the state,” he told reporters on Friday.
According to the commander-in-chief, “All fleets in the world have such practice - to be present where tension is growing.”
Russia’s permanent naval task force in the eastern part of the Mediterranean is currently comprised of the large landing ships Peresvet, Admiral Nevelsky, Minsk, Novocherkassk, Alexander Shabalin, the Admiral Panteleyev large anti-submarine ship and the Neustrashimy patrol ship. “In the near future the group will be supplemented by the Moskva guided-missile cruiser, Smetlivy patrol ship and Nikolai Filchenkov large landing ship. They all act according to the operational command plan in the far sea zone,” Chirkov informed.
Russia began building up forces in the Mediterranean in 2012. Last December, the Russian Navy started its constant naval presence mission in the eastern part of the Mediterranean. The ships and support vessels, performing tasks in the Mediterranean, have been grouped into a naval task force for better organisation of the force command and control.
