Iran Warns of Military Intervenstion in Syria ...

Iran stated on Saturday that there is "proof" that Syrian militants used chemical weapons in their war against the Syrian government, reassuring that “we are very concerned about information regarding the use of chemical weapons in Syria, and we strongly condemn the use of such weapons.”

Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman, Abbas Araqchi, was quoted by ISNA news agency as saying that there is proof terrorist groups carried out this action,’ Araqchi said in reference to Wednesday's allegedly deadly attacks in the Damascus area.

Iran also warned against any Western military intervention in the Syrian conflict, after the United States suggested it was weighing up such a possibility.

"There is no international authorization for a military intervention in Syria. We warn against any actions or statements that could create more tension in the region. I hope that White House officials show enough wisdom not to enter into such dangerous tumult," Araqchi added.

He further considered that "the provocative words of American officials or sending warships do not help to solve the problem in any way, but make the situation in the region more dangerous.”
“Iran has declared on several occasions that the crisis in Syria did not have a military solution," Araqchi was quoted as saying.

  2. U.S. military ready to act on Syria immediately if asked: Hagel...

(Reuters) - The U.S. military is ready to act immediately should President Barack Obama order action against Syria over a chemical weapons attack, Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel said in a television interview with the BBC on Tuesday.

"We have moved assets in place to be able to fulfill and comply with whatever option the president wishes to take," Hagel said during a trip to Brunei, according to a partial transcript provided by the BBC.

Asked if the U.S. military was ready to respond just "like that," Hagel said: "We are ready to go, like that."

Hagel's comments came a day after U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry laid the groundwork for possible military action against the Syrian government by saying Obama believed there needed to be "accountability" for the use of chemical weapons.

Hagel said the United States would have intelligence to present "very shortly" about the attack. But noted after calls with his British and French counterparts that there was little doubt among most U.S. allies that "the most base ... international humanitarian standard was violated."

  3. David Cameron recalls parliament over Syria crisis..

Prime minister tweets that MPs will return on Thursday to debate alleged use of chemical weapons by Assad regime.

MPs are to be recalled from their summer break to vote on whether Britain should take part in military action in response to the alleged use of chemical weapons by the Assad regime in Syria, David Cameron has said.

The prime minister said the Commons speaker, John Bercow, had agreed to his request to recall parliament from its summer recess on Thursday.

Cameron tweeted: "Speaker agrees my request to recall Parliament on Thurs. There'll be a clear Govt motion & vote on UK response to chemical weapons attacks."

The prime minister returned to Downing Street early from his summer holiday in Cornwall to allow him to chair a meeting on Wednesday of the national security council, which will consider evidence linking the Assad regime to the chemical attack last week.

Cameron is expected to make a statement to MPs on Thursday outlining what No 10 has described as compelling evidence of the regime's involvement in the attack....http://www.theguardian.com/politics/2013/aug/27/david-cameron-recalls-parliament-syria

  5. Iran Threatens to 'Leave Israel In Flames' if Syria Attacked...

ran's army chief of staff General Hassan Firouzabadi has claimed that any military action against Syria will have consequences beyond the region and "leave Israel in flames."

"Any military action against Syria will drive Israel to the edge of fire," Firouzabadi said in a statement carried by the official IRNA news agency.

"The US, Britain and their other allies will face losses by marching their armies into the region and Syria," he said.

Mohammad Ali Jafari, commander of Iran's powerful Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, said an attack on Syria "will mean the imminent destruction of Israel."

"Syria will turn into a more dangerous and deadly battlefield than the Vietnam War, and in fact, Syria will become the second Vietnam for the United States," Jafari said, as cited by international media.

Iran has blamed the Syrian rebels for last week's deadly chemical attack in Syria.

  6. Israel faces retaliation if U.S. attacks Syria: Iran military...

BEIRUT: Israel will face retaliation if the United States launches a military strike against Syria, a senior Iranian military official warned, Iran’s semi-official Fars News Agency reported Saturday.

“Israel will be hit by retaliatory attacks if the United States launches an offensive on Syria since it [the Jewish state] is the first instigator in attacking [Syria],” Iranian Army Chief of Staff Maj. Gen. Hassan Firouzabadi said.

Iran staunchly backs the regime in Damascus and is Hezbollah’s leading supporter in the region.

Firouzabadi accused Israel of spearheading efforts to drag Washington into a war with the government in Damascus.

The U.S. has stepped up its war rhetoric against Damascus after accusing President Bashar Assad’s regime of using chemical weapons earlier this month against opposition strongholds outside Damascus.

The Syrian government has strongly denied the accusations but vowed to counter any act of aggression against the country.

The Iranian military’s top brass also accused Washington of siding with Al-Qaeda affiliates in Syria, warning of consequences in case of a U.S. strike against the war-torn country.

"The U.S., which has invaded countries in the region under the big lie of battling Al-Qaeda following the September 11 [2001 attacks], is now fighting in favor of Al-Qaeda in Syria," the Iranian general said.

Firouzabadi also warned the U.S. war rhetoric could bring about massive problems for other powers.

“Regional countries backing this cruel war will suffer serious losses,” he said.....http://www.dailystar.com.lb/News/Middle-East/2013/Aug-31/229490-israel-faces-retaliation-if-us-attacks-syria-iran-military.ashx#ixzz2dYgg2g5h

  7. U.S. intercepts Iranian order for attack on U.S. interests in Iraq: report...

Reuters) - The United States has intercepted an order from an Iranian official instructing militants in Iraq to attack U.S. interests in Baghdad in the event the Obama administration launches a military strike in Syria, the Wall Street Journal reported on Thursday.

The American embassy in Baghdad was a likely target, according to unnamed U.S. officials quoted by the newspaper. The Journal said the officials did not describe the range of potential targets indicated by the intelligence.

In addition, the State Department issued a warning on Thursday telling U.S. citizens to avoid all but "essential" travel to Iraq.

President Barack Obama has asked the U.S. Congress to back his plan for limited strikes in response to a chemical weapons attack on civilians that the United States blames on Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's forces.

The Journal reported that the Iranian message was intercepted in recent days and came from the head of the Revolutionary Guards' Qods Force. The newspaper said the message went to Iranian-supported Shi'ite militia groups in Iraq.

The Journal reported that the message informed Shi'ite groups to be prepared to respond with force after any U.S. military strike on Syria.

"Travel within Iraq remains dangerous given the security situation," according to the State Department's warning, which replaced an earlier one "to update information on security incidents and to remind U.S. citizens of ongoing security concerns in Iraq, including kidnapping and terrorist violence."....http://www.reuters.com/article/2013/09/06/us-syria-crisis-usa-iran-idUSBRE98504120130906?feedType=RSS&feedName=worldNews

  8. U.S. risks igniting region with Syria attack: Iran minister...

(Reuters) - The United States will ignite a fire across the Middle East if it attacks Syria, Iran's new foreign minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said on a visit to Iraq on Sunday, warning Western powers against warmongering.

After more than two years of civil war, U.S. President Barack Obama is trying to drum up support for limited strikes on Syria in response to a chemical weapons attack that Washington blames on the government of Bashar al-Assad.

The Shi'ite-led government in Baghdad has sought to maintain a neutral stance towards the conflict and opposes any Western military intervention in Syria, fearing it will further destabilize Iraq.

"We are concerned about warmongering in this region," said Zarif at a news conference during his first official trip abroad since taking office. "Those who are short-sighted and are beating the drums of war are starting a fire that will burn everyone."

Zarif was received by his Iraqi counterpart Hoshyar Zebari and was also expected to meet Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki later in the day.

The Syrian conflict has widened a fault line between Islam's two main denominations, pitting mainly Sunni rebels, their Gulf Arab sponsors and some Western powers against Assad, whose Alawite sect derives from Shi'ism.

Iraq's own sectarian balance has come under acute strain from the civil war next door, which has given new momentum to Sunni Islamist insurgents who have been striking with a frequency and on a scale not seen in years.

Sunni and Shi'ite militants from Iraq have also crossed into Syria to fight on opposite sides of the conflict, complicating the government's official position of neutrality....http://www.reuters.com/article/2013/09/08/us-iraq-iran-visit-idUSBRE98704E20130908?feedType=RSS&feedName=worldNews

  9. Iran FM from Iraq: No Pretext Justifies Military Strike in Region...Iran Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif says any military action in the Middle East region is condemned no matter the pretext....

“We condemn the use of chemical weapons and reject any military action in the region, regardless of the pretext, and regard political strategies and dialog among different sides as the best solution to regional crises,” Zarif stated on Sunday.

The top Iranian diplomat, who is on his first official visit to Iraq, made the remarks in a meeting with Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki.

He highlighted the silence of certain powers on the use of chemical weapons by former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein during the eight-year war with Iran and criticized them for their current double standards.

The Iraqi premier, for his part, said a military strike against Syria would pose a threat to the entire Middle East region and called for joint efforts by Iran and Iraq to resolve the Syria crisis via dialog and diplomatic measures.

The Iranian Foreign Minister arrived in the Iraqi capital, Baghdad, on Sunday to hold talks with senior Iraqi officials on regional and bilateral issues. Ahead of his meeting with Maliki, Zarif also held talks with his Iraqi counterpart, Hoshyar Zebari, and Vice President Khazir al-Khazaei.

  10. Syria opposition rejects Iran mediation offer...

Opposition coalition doubts credibility of Iranian proposal, citing links between Tehran and President Bashar al-Assad.

Syria's opposition National Coalition has rejected an Iranian offer to broker talks with the regime, saying the bid was "not serious" and calling Tehran "part of the problem."

"The Iranian initiative is not serious and lacks political credibility," the key opposition grouping said in a statement on Saturday.

The comments came after Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said on Thursday that his government was willing to "facilitate dialogue" between the Syrian government and opposition fighters.

"We must join hands to constructively work toward national dialogue, whether in Syria or Bahrain. We must create an atmosphere where peoples of the region can decide their own fates," Rouhani wrote in a column in The Washington Post.

    No credibility

But the Syrian opposition said it was sceptical that Iran, a staunch ally of President Bashar al-Assad, could broker talks, calling Tehran "part of the problem”.

"It would be more useful if the Iranian leadership withdrew its military experts and fighters from Syrian territory," the Coalition said.

The Syrian opposition has long alleged that Iran has sent military personnel to help Assad's forces in their fight against the rebels.

Iran is also a key backer of Lebanon's Shia Hezbollah movement, which has sent fighters to bolster Syria's armed forces in key battles, notably their recapture of the strategic central town of Qusayr in June.

Tehran has also helped bolster the regime by providing funds to the cash-strapped government......http://www.aljazeera.com/news/middleeast/2013/09/20139218174260390.html
