Κύριος σκοπός της επίσκεψης του Κέβιν Κoνρόι θα είναι οι εκ του σύνεγγυς συνεννοήσεις με τους δεκάδες (80 με 90) Κυπρίους καταγγέλλοντες, για τους οποίους δεν έχει κινηθεί ακόμα η νομική διαδικασία.
Το δικηγορικό γραφείο του Μπέρμιγχαμ KJ Conroy έχει ήδη προβεί στο πρώτο βήμα που ορίζει το βρετανικό νομικό σύστημα στη διαδικασία αίτησης αποζημίωσης για οκτώ αιτούντες.
- Έχουν αποσταλεί στη βρετανική κυβέρνηση ισάριθμες επιστολές (letter of claim) στις οποίες παρατίθενται οι καταγγελίες με βάση τις οποίες δύο γυναίκες και έξι άνδρες μέλη της ΕΟΚΑ προτίθενται να καταθέσουν αγωγή κατά της Βρετανίας.
Η διαδικασία επιτρέπει στον εναγόμενο, στην προκειμένη περίπτωση τη βρετανική κυβέρνηση, να εξετάσει επί ένα διάστημα έως έξι μηνών κατά πόσο οι καταγγελίες ευσταθούν.
Ωστόσο, οι ενδείξεις από το Λονδίνο είναι πως οι καταγγελίες δεν αναγνωρίζονται, με αποτέλεσμα να μην υπάρχει πρόθεση διακανονισμού ή διαπραγμάτευσης πριν κατατεθούν οι αγωγές.
- Ανάλογη ήταν η στάση που τήρησε αρχικά η βρετανική κυβέρνηση απέναντι στις διεκδικήσεις μελών της φυλής Μάου-Μάου που κατήγγειλαν επίσης βασανισμό τους από τις αποικιακές Αρχές στην Κένυα.
Ωστόσο, μετά από τα πρώτα στάδια δικαστικού αγώνα οι Μάου-Μάου δικαιώθηκαν, καθώς η βρετανική κυβέρνηση προέβη σε εξωδικαστικό διακανονισμό και ο υπουργός Εξωτερικών της Βρετανίας, Γουϊλιαμ Χέιγκ υποχρεώθηκε να απολογηθεί στη Βουλή των Κοινοτήτων για τα πεπραγμένα της αποικιακής διοίκησης.
Μιλώντας στο ΚΥΠΕ, ο κ. Κονρόι εκτίμησε ότι η αρνητική στάση της βρετανικής κυβέρνησης «δεν είναι συνετή», καθώς θεωρεί ισχυρό το προηγούμενο της κενυατικής περίπτωσης.
Ο κ. Χέιγκ είχε πάντως σημειώσει στη δήλωσή του ότι από τη στιγμή που η υπόθεση των Μάου-Μάου δεν είχε φτάσει σε δικαστική ολοκλήρωση, δεν δημιουργούσε προηγούμενο.
«Το προηγούμενο έχει δημιουργηθεί. Από νομική άποψη η υπόθεση των Κυπρίων πελατών μου θεωρώ ότι είναι δυνατή», πρόσθεσε ο Βρετανός δικηγόρος, εκτιμώντας ότι είναι πολύ πιθανό η κυπριακή υπόθεση να ακολουθήσει τα χνάρια αυτής των Μάου-Μάου.
Η επιχειρηματολογία της πλευράς των εναγόντων αναμένεται να ισχυροποιηθεί ακόμα περισσότερο όταν ολοκληρωθεί στη Γενεύη η εξέταση εγγράφων της εποχής από επιθεωρητές του Διεθνούς Ερυθρού Σταυρού, στα οποία καταγράφονται λεπτομερώς περιπτώσεις που επιβεβαιώνουν τις καταγγελίες των αγωνιστών της ΕΟΚΑ.
Για τη συγκεκριμένη πτυχή της υπόθεσης εργάζεται Γάλλος δικηγόρος. Νομικές εξελίξεις στην υπόθεση τοποθετούνται χρονικά πιθανότατα στις αρχές του επόμενου έτους.

Mail Online, a British media outlet, reports that 14 Caribbean countries hired the British law firm Leigh Day to sue Britain, together with France and Netherlands, in order to demand reparations for slavery. A group of Caribbean nations is demanding to be repaid for the remaining disastrous legacy of the Atlantic slave trade.
Caricom, a group of 12 former British colonies together with the former French colony Haiti and the Dutch-held Suriname rightly argue that the European governments are morally and lawfully obligated to pay compensation for the painful legacy they have left behind. The British law firm Leigh Day recently won compensation for hundreds of Kenyans tortured by the British colonial government during the Mau Mau rebellion of the 1950s.
The Caribbean nations have not specified how much money they are seeking from their former colonial masters. However, they made a reference to the fact that Britain paid slave owners £20 million when it abolished slavery in 1834. That sum would currently be the equivalent of £200 billion.
In its lawsuit, Caricom claims slavery condemned the region to a devastating poverty whose destructive effects are still deeply felt over it. Comparing their demands to Germany recompensing the Jews for the Holocaust and New Zealand compensating Maoris, Caricom leaders say the horrible legacy of these crimes against humanity must be repaired for the empowerment of Caribbean societies.
Critics of Caricom compensation demand say that many of Caricom’s members are hardly poor, including millionaire havens such as the Bahamas and Barbados. In 2007, Prime minister Tony Blair stated that he feels regret for the 'unbearable suffering' caused by Britain’s role in slavery. Nevertheless, he did not mention anything regarding financial compensation.
The British official position is that paying reparations for slavery is the wrong way to address 'an historical problem. Caricom is persistent about reaching a settlement with the European countries. They will only take legal action if negotiations collapse. A Caricom reparations commission at present works on finding out the amount and method of the compensation. They focus on Britain because it was the largest slave owner in the 1830s and the British made the most money out of slavery and the slave trade by converting slave profits into industrial profits.
Some Caricom countries already get financial aid from Britain and other Commonwealth countries.
