  1. Israel's settlement expansion a sign of 'bad faith,' say Palestinians...

The second round of US-brokered Mideast peace talks will be held next week, the State Department said Thursday, even as the Palestinians protested new Israeli settlement activity.

In a letter to Secretary of State John Kerry, the chief Palestinian negotiator, Saeb Erekat, said Israel's latest settlement announcements were an indication of "Israel's bad faith and lack of seriousness" in the talks.

The letter was sent Thursday, the same day that State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki announced that Mideast peace envoy Martin Indyk and deputy special envoy Frank Lowenstein were heading to the region for talks Aug. 14 in Jerusalem, followed by a later meeting in the West Bank.....http://www.csmonitor.com/World/Latest-News-Wires/2013/0808/Israel-s-settlement-expansion-a-sign-of-bad-faith-say-Palestinians

  2. New Israel settlement homes anger Palestinians...

Palestinians have reacted angrily to Israel's approval of nearly 1,200 new Jewish settlement homes, just days before peace talks are set to resume.

Palestinian negotiators said the approval cast doubt on Israel's sincerity in the peace process.

Israel's housing minister said no country in the world would take orders on where it could build its homes.

The issue of building settlements in occupied Palestinian areas halted the last direct talks in September 2010.

About 500,000 Jews live in more than 100 settlements built since Israel's 1967 occupation of the West Bank and East Jerusalem. The Palestinians want to establish their state in those areas, as well as the Gaza Strip.

The settlements are considered illegal under international law, although Israel disputes this.

    1. Israel Faces Deepening Isolation, Kerry Warns...

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry's peace mission to the Middle East is semi-quixotic, if not wholly quixotic. I doubt he'll reach his goal of negotiating a final-status agreement between the Palestinians and the Israelis. The two sides haven't even agreed yet to the topics they'll discuss in negotiations.

But we should give Kerry this: He has managed to at least partially capture the attention of the Israeli prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu. I say partially because the Netanyahu government's self-destructive West Bank settlement program continues apace (though the latest round of construction is scheduled to take place on territory that would almost certainly be granted to Israel in final-status talks).

There are some early signs that Netanyahu is realizing the price his country may one day pay for its settlements, in particular those near Palestinian population centers. He met recently with some of Israel's leading manufacturers, who expressed their worry that their products may one day be boycotted in Europe, a worry he shares. Kerry, capitalizing on this anxiety, has warned Netanyahu in recent weeks that if the current peace talks bear no fruit, Israel may soon be facing an international delegitimization campaign -- in his words -- "on steroids." ....http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2013-08-12/israel-faces-deepening-isolation-kerry-warns.html

  5. Unprecedented’ Israeli settlement expansion could sink Palestinian peace talks....

The long-stalled Middle East peace talks could “collapse” over Israel’s announcement of new settlements in the West Bank and east Jerusalem, a senior Palestinian authority said on the eve of the planned resumption of negotiations.

“Settlement expansion goes against the US administration's pledges and threatens to cause the negotiations' collapse,” Yasser Abed Rabbo told AFP.

Abed Rabbo’s comment comes shortly after Israel’s approval of over 2,000 new settlement units on land claimed by the Palestinians as part of their future state.

Earlier in the week, the Israeli government backed the construction of nearly 1,200 new apartments for Jewish settlements in East Jerusalem and the West Bank. On Tuesday - just a day before the scheduled new round of face-to-face talks between Israelis and Palestinians – Jerusalem’s municipality approved the construction of 942 other settlement units on the lands occupied by Israelis since the 1967 Six-Day War.

“This settlement expansion is unprecedented,” Abed Rabbo stated, adding that “it threatens to make talks fail even before they've started.”

Another Palestinian official familiar with the negotiations labeled the decision to approve “such a massive number of housing units” days before the planned gathering “as sick’’. The unnamed source, who spoke earlier with The Christian Science Monitor, added that the Palestinians “may not come” to the talks.

The move was also criticized in Washington, the EU and the UN.

American Secretary of State John Kerry said on Monday that the US “views all of the settlements as illegitimate.” However, he urged the Palestinians “not to react adversely” to Israeli’s latest announcements. Kerry, who has played an active role in the resumption of the peace talks which broke down in 2010, called on the Israelis and Palestinians to return to the negotiating table as planned on Wednesday in Jerusalem.
