  2. Syrian opposition says peace talks off the table after Damascus attack...

An international peace conference on Syria, planned to be held in Geneva, is off the table for now following an alleged chemical weapons attack in Damascus, a senior member of Syria's opposition coalition said on Monday.

Members of the Syrian National Coalition met representatives of the "Friends of Syria", a group of Western and Arab nations opposed to President Bashar al-Assad, in Istanbul on Monday in a meeting originally meant to discuss plans for the conference.

"It (the meeting) was for Geneva but we refused to speak about Geneva after what's happened ... We must punish this dictator, Bashar the Chemist we call him, and then we can discuss Geneva," coalition Secretary General Badr Jamous told Reuters after the meeting.....http://news.yahoo.com/syrian-opposition-says-peace-talks-off-table-damascus-154808504.html

  3. Hysteria around chemical attack suits those who want military intervention in Syria - Lavrov...

Following last week’s chemical attack, the West has engineered a media campaign to facilitate a military incursion, says Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov. The minister also cast doubts on the veracity of US and European claims about the incident.

“Official Washington, London and Paris say they have incontrovertible evidence that the Syrian government is behind the chemical attack in Damascus, but they have not yet presented this evidence. Yet, they keep saying that the ‘red line’ has been crossed,” Lavrov said during an emergency press conference in Moscow.

“Now, we are hearing calls for a military campaign against Bashar Assad.”

Lavrov said that the US, Britain and other countries have assembled a “powerful force” and are “readying their ships and planes” for a possible invasion.

The minister said that the development set the world on a "perilous path" and warned that “repeating the Iraqi and Lybyan scenario” and bringing in outside forces, would be a “terrible mistake that will lead to more blood being spilt”.

The minister reserved particular outrage for the newly-mooted possibility of NATO staging a strike on chemical storage facilities without a United Nations mandate.

Asked if Russia was going to join in the potential conflict on either side, Lavrov said “We have no plans to go to war, but we hope that others think of long-term interests.” ....http://rt.com/news/lavrov-syria-press-conference-003/

  4. Russia sends aid to Syria, withdraws more nationals...

Russia delivered another package of humanitarian aid to Syria and would withdraw more Russian nationals from the war-torn country, the Emergency Situations Ministry said on August 27.

"At 9:00 Moscow time (0500 GMT) an Il-76 aircraft took off from Ramenskoye airport near Moscow carrying 20 tons of humanitarian cargo," ministry spokeswoman Irina Rossius told reporters.

The plane was loaded mostly with canned foods and sugar, she added.

On its return trip the plane would pick up about 100 Russian nationals and 80 citizens of other Commonwealth of Independent States(CIS).

Russia regularly sends humanitarian aid to Syria and withdraws its citizens from Syria.

On May 29, two planes delivered 22 tones of cargo to Syria's harbour city of Latakia and evacuated 128 nationals of Russia and other CIS countries. In April, Russia delivered three batches of humanitarian aid for Syrian refugees in Lebanon and Jordan.

Also on Tuesday, Moscow said it was disappointed with the US decision to cancel a bilateral meeting on Syria planned in the Hague.....http://www.globaltimes.cn/content/806682.shtml#.UhyBoX-IzJc

  5. Turkey seizes gas masks, weapons from North Korea destined for Syria: Report...

North Korea tried to export gas masks to Syria but they were seized in Turkey along with arms and ammunition, a Japanese daily said Tuesday, as the US threatened action over an alleged chemical weapons attack.

A Libyan-registered vessel, identified as Al En Ti Sar, left North Korea for Syria earlier this year with the consignment, the Sankei Shimbun said, quoting unnamed sources from the US military, Japanese and South Korean intelligence.

The US military, which obtained the information, was tracking the ship in coordination with other countries, the daily -- which is known for its North Korea coverage -- said in a detailed report.

The vessel sailed through Dardanelles in Turkey on April 3 and was searched shortly after by Turkish authorities, who had been tipped off by the US.

Turkish officials seized 1,400 rifles and pistols and some 30,000 bullets as well as gas masks apparently for chemical protection, the daily said......http://www.hurriyetdailynews.com/turkey-seizes-gas-masks-weapons-from-north-korea-destined-for-syria-report.aspx?pageID=238&nID=53298&NewsCatID=359

  6. Hagel: US military ready to act on Syria immediately if asked...

immediately should President Barack Obama order action against Syria over a chemical weapons attack, Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel said in a television interview with the BBC on Tuesday.

    2. Netanyahu: Israel will hit hard if Syrian threat detected...

Following second security cabinet meeting in two days, prime minister parries Syrian warning that it’ll strike Israel if US attacks.

The prime minister’s pointed remarks were the latest in a string of saber-rattling statements issued by Jerusalem and Damascus, with both sides threatening military action if they were struck.

Syrian Foreign Minister Walid Moallem said in a press conference earlier on Tuesday that Syria would fight back in case of a US strike, and Khalaf Muftah, a senior Baath Party official, said Monday that Damascus would consider Israel “behind the [Western] aggression and [it] will therefore come under fire.”

“We have strategic weapons and we’re capable of responding,” Muftah said. “Normally the strategic weapons are aimed at Israel.”....http://www.timesofisrael.com/netanyahu-israel-will-hit-hard-if-syrian-threat-detected/

  8. Syrian rebels used Sarin nerve gas, not Assad’s regime: U.N. official...

Testimony from victims strongly suggests it was the rebels, not the Syrian government, that used Sarin nerve gas during a recent incident in the revolution-wracked nation, a senior U.N. diplomat said Monday.

Carla del Ponte, a member of the U.N. Independent International Commission of Inquiry on Syria, told Swiss TV there were “strong, concrete suspicions but not yet incontrovertible proof,” that rebels seeking to oust Syrian strongman Bashar al-Assad had used the nerve agent.

But she said her panel had not yet seen any evidence of Syrian government forces using chemical weapons, according to the BBC, but she added that more investigation was needed....http://p.washingtontimes.com/news/2013/may/6/syrian-rebels-used-sarin-nerve-gas-not-assads-regi/#ixzz2dCChumNm
