  1. Egypt awaits army statement after deadline passes.....

Egyptians are awaiting a televised statement on the political crisis, after a deadline set by the army for a resolution to the turmoil passed.

President Mohammed Morsi has repeated his offer of a consensus government, but still refuses to step down.

A spokesman for the Muslim Brotherhood, to which Mr Morsi belongs, tweeted that a "full military coup" was under way.

Armoured vehicles have been seen moving through the streets.

There are also reports that Egyptian officials have placed an international travel ban on Mr Morsi and other senior members of the Muslim Brotherhood.

When the deadline set by the army passed, cheers echoed in Cairo's Tahrir Square, where tens of thousands of protesters had gathered.

The army had earlier held meetings with political and religious leaders to discuss the crisis.

But the ruling Freedom and Justice party - the political arm of Mr Morsi's Muslim Brotherhood - stayed away from these talks.......http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-middle-east-23157801

  2. Turkey's European Union Minister Egemen Bagis expressed hope no undesirable development would take place in Egypt....

Turkey's European Union Minister and Chief Negotiator Egemen Bagis said, "I hope no undesirable development will take place in Egypt, and democracy will be strengthened."

Speaking to Anadolu Agency (AA), Bagis underlined that Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi was a democratic leader elected by two-thirds of public.

"Morsi tried to make very important reforms in Egypt despite his short tenure, and his efforts should be appreciated in a country facing crisis one after another," added Bagis.

Bagis also called on the international community to support Morsi against pro-coup groups in Egypt.

Bagis said he was in touch with EU officials including European Commissioner for Enlargement and European Neighbourhood Policy Stephan Fule and European Parliament Speaker Martin Schulz, who agreed with him about the solution.

"I hope no undesirable development will take place in Egypt, and democracy will be strengthened and problems will be solved within democratic ways," added Bagis.
Turkey ready to enter EU soon if blockades removed
Egemen Bagis has said Turkey progressed enough to enter the EU soon if obstacles and political blockades were removed.

Speaking in Turkey's western province of Izmir on Wednesday, Bagis said the EU needed Turkey more now than Turkey's need for the EU.

"The EU process is raising per capita income from $400 to $11 thousand in Turkey at the same time. It is raising the number of universities to over 200 up from 14. It is increasing the annual tourism revenue to $30 billion from $9 billion. It means that global investments in Turkey boosted employment. It is a process which offers people healthier food, transport facilities, traveling safely. This process is very important not only for Turkey but also the EU," Bagis said.

Bagis said Turkey's strategic importance was realized by many EU politicians, adding Turkey also needed to take strides.

"Development and growth of Turkey makesus strong in the EU process", said Bagis ." Those who are opposed to Turkey's EU membership are the ones who have never seen Turkey. The ones who have seen Turkey and hospitality of Turkish people welcome Turkey's EU accession. We need to eliminate people's prejudices."

Bagis said surveys showed that nearly all Turkish people believed the reforms made in the EU process strengthened Turkey's democracy, economy, human rights standards but when they were asked if Turkey would enter the EU, the figures fell down, adding "Our citizens have begun to lose faith in Turkey's EU membership."

Bagis underscored Turkey's young population, saying Turkey with average age of 28-29 had Europe's one of youngest populations and would made a huge contribution to Europe.

He also said Turkey had 75 percent of energy resources in the north and south of the country which Europe needs.

  3. U.S. says 'very concerned' about unrest in Egypt: State Department...

The United States is 'very concerned' about the situation in Egypt, the U.S. State Department said on Wednesday of the sweeping protests surrounding a stand-off between Egypt's armed forces and Islamist President Mohamed Mursi.

The situation in Egypt remains fluid, and the United States cannot confirm whether a military coup is underway, department spokesperson Jen Psaki told reporters.

"We do ... remain very concerned about what we're seeing on the ground," Psaki said at a State Department briefing.

Al Jazeera’s Egyptian broadcast has been taken off the air. Both Reuters and Al Jazeera itself reported that security forces raided Cairo offices and detained at least five staff members.

Karim El-Assiuti has told Reuters his colleagues at the Al Jazeera Mubasher Misr channel were arrested while working at their studio. The station was prevented from broadcasting from a pro-Morsi rally, and a broadcasting crew was detained.

Ayman Mohyeldin, a Foreign Correspondent for NBC News, reported via Twitter that security personnel entered the broadcaster's offices overlooking Tahrir square looking for Al Jazeera journalists.

  9. Turkish FM slams military intervention in Egypt ...

"Whatever the reason is, it is unacceptable that a democratically elected government was overthrown by illegitimate means, even more, with a military coup," the Turkish foreign minister said in Istanbul on Thursday, Turkish daily Hurriyet reported.

Ahmet Davutoğlu criticized the military intervention in Egypt, saying that the intervention should not overshadow the democratic gains of the January 25 revolution.

“Our message is clear: The January 25 revolution was the first big revolution of the 21st century. Protecting the gains of this revolution should be the priority of the Egyptian people. We totally reject the assessments that the ‘Arab Spring’ has turned into an ‘Arab Winter,’ or that Muslims cannot be governed by democracy,” Hurriyet quoted Davutoğlu as saying.-

Islamist gunmen attacked armed forces guarding the El-Arish airport early on Friday. It was not clear whether the attack, and another on a police station in the nearby town of Rafah, on the Gaza border, were in reaction to the army's overthrow of elected Islamist President Mohamed Morsi on Wednesday.

CAIRO (AP) — Egypt’s interim president held talks Saturday with the army chief and interior minister following an outburst of violence between supporters and opponents of ousted leader Mohammed Morsi that killed at least 36 people across the country and deepened the battle lines in the divided nation.

Three days after the military pushed out Morsi, Egypt’s first democratically elected leader, the country appears to be careening toward further conflict and turmoil. 21. Egypt Islamists vow new demos after day of deadly clashes...

Islamists vowed further protests on Saturday to demand the military restore Egypt's first democratically elected leader, after a night of ferocious clashes that killed 30 people and injured more than 1,100 nationwide.

"The masses will continue their civilised protests and peaceful sit-ins in Cairo until the military coup is reversed and the legitimate president is restored," a coalition of Islamist groups said in a statement.

Despite the talk of peaceful demonstrations, residents in parts of Cairo reported seeing dozens of bearded Islamists armed with machineguns, machetes and sticks on Friday night before the deadly clashes broke out.

Snipers were spotted on rooftops, and medics told AFP they treated some residents of the normally quiet middle-class neighbourhood of Manial for bullet wounds with a downward trajectory.

The backlash came two days after the army toppled Islamist president Mohamed Morsi, underlining the determination of his Muslim Brotherhood to disrupt the military's plan for a political transition until new elections.

  24. Egypt’s interim president retreats from naming ElBaradei Prime Minister...

The appointment of former IAEA chief Mohamed Elbaradei for the post of Egypt’s interim prime minister has been placed on hold as consultations with various political parties over the selection of an interim PM continue.

Speaking at an impromptu press conference held at Cairo's Ittihadiya presidential palace, spokesman for interim President Adly Mansour, Ahmed Musilamani, told reporters the presidency had to take account opposition to ElBaradei and denied that the nomination of the Nobel Peace laureate was ever certain.

Earlier, the Tamarod movement that organized the mass protests that lead to the overthrow of Morsi on Wednesday, made the announcement after consultations with Adly Mansour, that Mohamed ElBaradei was appointed to be Egypt's interim Prime Minister.

The announcement was greeted with cheers from thousands of Tamarod supporters outside the presidential palace. They waited there for most of the day as ElBaradei spent Saturday in discussions with other chiefs of Egypt’s new coalition, involving army chief Abdel Fattah al-Sisi at the Ministry of Defense.

Opposition from the country’s most prominent Islamist parties greeted the news reports ElBaradei would be appointed. The Nour Party, Egypt's second biggest Islamist group made its objections known.

"The nomination of ElBaradei violates the roadmap that the political and national powers had agreed on with General Abdel Fattah al-Sisi," its deputy leader Ahmed Khalil told Al Ahram.

The Muslim Brotherhood, the country’s largest Islamic party and supporters of former President Morsi also voiced their anger over ElBaradei’s nomination, calling it “Washington’s choice” and urged more protests on Sunday. .....http://rt.com/news/elbaradei-egypt-prime-minister-746/

Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan discussed the political crisis in Egypt with U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon in a phone conversation late July 6.

The prime minister voiced his concern to the U.N. chief over the “stall of the democratic process by the military coup, which ignores the civil will, and urged all sides to act with good sense,” according to a statement from the Prime Ministry Press Center.

He also stressed the importance of staying away from all kinds of violence, clashes and incitement, emphasizing the restoration of the civil administration as soon as possible through elections.

  29. Egypt’s Muslim Brotherhood calls for ‘uprising’ after at least 42 killed....Salafis withdraw from talks...

Egypt's Muslim Brotherhood called for an "uprising" on Monday after dozens of supporters were killed outside an elite army headquarters in Cairo, and urged international intervention to prevent a "new Syria."

The Islamist group's political arm, the Freedom and Justice Party, called for "an uprising by the great people of Egypt against those trying to steal their revolution with tanks." It urged "the international community and international groups and all the free people of the world to intervene to stop further massacres ... and prevent a new Syria in the Arab world."

The death toll in violence on Monday at the Cairo headquarters of the Republican Guard rose to 42, Egyptian state television said, after the Muslim Brotherhood accused the security forces of attacking protesters there.

The Egyptian military said "a terrorist group" had tried to storm the building. One army officer was killed and 40 wounded, the military said. State television reported that an additional 322 people had been wounded in what it described as an attempt to storm the Republican Guard's headquarters.

Earlier, Egypt’s armed forces said that “armed terrorists” had tried to storm the headquarters of the elite Republican Guard, leaving one security officer dead, in a statement quoted by the website of state-owned daily Al-Ahram. “At dawn, an armed terrorist group tried to storm the Republican Guard (building)..., attacking army troops and police, which led to the death of one officer and left several conscripts injured, including six in critical condition,” the statement said.

The Brotherhood’s official spokesman, Gehad El-Haddad, who is at a pro-Morsi sit-in at a mosque near the scene, said 37 Morsi supporters had been killed. He said shooting broke out in the early morning while Islamists were praying and staging a peaceful sit-in outside the Republican Guard barracks.

    Salafis withdraw from talks

As an immediate consequence, Salafist Al-Nour party said that it had withdrawn from talks on the formation of a new government in response to the killing of protesters. “We have decided to withdraw immediately from all negotiations in response to the massacre outside the Republican Guard” headquarters, Al-Nour spokesman Nadder Bakkar said on Twitter.

Supporters of Morsi’s Muslim Brotherhood have mobilized in large numbers in different parts of Cairo in recent days, vowing to defend Morsi, who was ousted by the military on Wednesday after mass protests calling for him to be removed from power

  30. ‘The way forward is for Egypt to declare its independence from the US’....

The US gives $1.5 billion a year to the Egyptian government, and if it refused this money they would be able to follow an independent economic policy, supported by the majority of Egyptians, British journalist Neil Clark told RT.

RT: How do you foresee this violence affecting the situation and stability in Egypt?

Neil Clark: It is a very dangerous escalation I think, because whether we take the lie from the army where they say five people were killed or there were 42 people killed or more than that. It’s obviously a very dangerous situation and what the Muslim Brotherhood really has got the keys to this situation how to solve it, what would they do next? They’ve called for an uprising against the government. The Salafists groups have also called that and we are in a very dangerous situation where we could see Egypt break out into civil war. Let’s hope that doesn’t happen. And I think it is very important now for the army to offer an olive branch to the opposition, perhaps, in this state of affairs at the moment.

RT: You say the Muslim Brotherhood has the key to the situation here, but it seems, frankly, that it’s really the military that has the key to the ongoing unrest. If, as reported, it is the military that has opened fire, this is setting the country up for a massive clash. How do you see that being resolved?

NC: The Morsi supporters have to decide what they really want. They don’t have the strength to actually take power. They don’t have the numbers, they don’t have the majority support. The army has got the guns to put it simply. ....http://rt.com/op-edge/egypt-declare-independence-from-us-783/

    1. Russian MP questions legitimacy of Egyptian president's ouster ...

MOSCOW, July 10 (Xinhua) -- The Egyptian military's overthrow of President Mohamed Morsi could hardly be described as legitimate, a Russian parliament deputy said Wednesday.

"The events in Egypt are actually the denial of the results of the democratic elections," Alexei Pushkov, head of the international affairs committee in the Russian lower house of parliament, told reporters.

Pushkov said this cast "serious doubt" on his ouster's legitimacy.

He also said the events in Egypt could have been orchestrated by forces outside that country.

"This is not a democratic response but serious political manipulation," the Interfax news agency quoted Pushkov as saying, adding Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates were politically and financially supporting the new regime in Cairo, allocating 8 billion U.S. dollars for that purpose.

He said these countries' support for the anti-Morsi coup was based on worries the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt could potentially undermine the Gulf monarchies.

Egypt's new prosecution issued arrest warrants Wednesday for the Muslim Brotherhood and two other Islamists parties' leaders.

CAIRO- Tens of thousands of Egyptians marched on Cairo's streets in the early hours of Saturday to demand ousted Islamist President Mohamed Morsi be reinstated, but there were none of the deadly clashes that swept Egypt a week ago.

Morsi's Muslim Brotherhood called on Friday for "a day of marching on", and 10 days after the military overthrew Egypt's first freely elected president, large crowds descended on the capital waving flags and chanting slogans.

A week earlier similar scenes of protest turned violent when pro- and anti-Morsi demonstrators clashed in cities and towns across the country, killing 35 people and widening the rift between Egyptians on different sides of the political divide.

Three days after that, Egypt was left reeling again when soldiers opened fire on a group of pro-Morsi demonstrators outside the Republican Guard compound in Cairo where he is being held, killing 53. Four soldiers also died.

  44. German Chancellor Merkel calls for release of Egypt's Morsi...

German Chancellor Angela Merkel called today for the release of Egypt's former president Mohamed Morsi, who was arrested on July 3 after being deposed by the army.

She said she agreed with her Foreign Affairs Minister Guido Westerwelle "that Mr. Morsi should be released" and called for "an inclusive (political) process involving all groups of the Egyptian population", speaking with public broadcaster ARD.

"Everything must be done to find a common path" in Egypt, she said.

Egypt's first freely elected president was overthrown in a military coup on July 3 after millions took to the streets calling on him to step down.

Since then, Morsi's Muslim Brotherhood movement has led demonstrations against the ouster, urging an "uprising" after accusing troops and police of "massacring" its supporters during dawn prayers on Monday when 51 people were killed.

Westerwelle had also urged Morsi's release two days ago and demanded that a "neutral institution" immediately be granted access to him. The United States also called for Morsi's release and again condemned a wave of arbitrary arrests of members of his Muslim Brotherhood.

Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, who maintains a very strong stance against the military takeover, had also called for Morsi's release last week.

The US diplomat had met earlier with premier-designate Hazem al-Beblawi and is scheduled to meet military chief and Defense Minister Gen. Abdel Fattah al-Sisi later today...

    CAIRO

Egypt's interim President Adly Mansour met Monday with visiting US Deputy Secretary of State William Burns to discuss latest developments in Egypt.

The meeting was also attended by US Ambassador Anne Patterson and Mansour's adviser for political affairs, Mostafa Hegazi.

Burns, who arrived in Cairo Sunday on the first visit by a senior American official since Egypt's military ousted elected president Mohammad Morsi on July 3, gave no statements after the meeting.

The US diplomat had met earlier with premier-designate Hazem al-Beblawi and is scheduled to meet military chief and Defense Minister Gen. Abdel Fattah al-Sisi later today.

A diplomatic source told the Anadolu Agency that, during his meeting with al-Beblawi, Burns had stressed Washington's desire to see a civilian government in Egypt that met the aspirations of the Egyptian people.

While countries like Turkey and Tunisia have described what happened on July 3 as a military coup, the Obama administration has avoided using the term, since, under US law, that would mean an automatic halt of the $1.3 billion Egypt receives every year in US military aid.

Washington has, however, called for the release of Morsi, who has not been seen in public since his ouster. The deposed president's whereabouts, meanwhile, remain unknown.

EU Minister said that the incidents in Egypt were not military intervention but a coup

    ANKARA

Turkish EU Minister and Chief Negotiator Egemen Bagis criticized the EU on Monday, saying, " EU described the incident inEgypt as 'intervention'; however, this was not an intervention, this was clearly a 'coup'."

Bagis said that (EU) countries, which could not describe the incident in Egypt as a coup, could not describe the savagery as savagery.

"Some countries wanted to open the way of the pro-coups, but they understood that this was not correct. Because, one of the most important value of EU is democracy," said Bagis.

Bagis stressed that to make a coup against a democratically elected president and repeal the constitution approved by the public were not compatible with EU values.

Bagis pointed out that Turkey had given a principal reaction to incidents in Egypt after the coup, saying, "We have been waiting for EU to give the same principle reaction to the coup."

  50. Thousands of Morsi supporters rally across Egypt...Demonstrators demand reinstatement of Islamist president ousted by the army earlier this month...

CAIRO (AP) — Thousands of protesters are holding rallies across Egypt to demand the reinstatement of ousted President Mohammed Morsi.

The Muslim Brotherhood, from which Morsi hails, is mobilizing followers to march in Cairo and elsewhere Friday for a protest they’re dubbing “Breaking the Coup.”

Youth activists who launched the massive protests that led to Morsi’s ouster by the military also plan a mass demonstration in Cairo’s Tahrir Square, raising fears of clashes in the capital between the two sides and authorities.

The military has warned it will act swiftly to prevent violence.

The protests come days after an interim administration was appointed.

Egypt’s interim President Adly Mansour has pledged to protect his country against those who seek chaos and violence in the aftermath of the popularly backed military coup.

The rally will kick off from Rabaa al-Adawiya Square after the nightly Ramadan prayers of Taraweeh

    CAIRO

Supporters of ousted President Mohamed Morsi plan to organize two marches later Friday to the headquarters of both the Defense Ministry and the National Security, according to a statement issued by a coalition of largely Islamist parties and groups.

A march will kick off from Rabaa al-Adawiya Square after the nightly Ramadan prayers of Taraweeh to the Defense Ministry HQ in Kobri al-Qubba and another to the National Security premises in Nasr City, eastern Cairo, the National Alliance for the Defense of Legitimacy said in the statement.

Thousands of pro-Morsi supporters have been camping out in Rabaa since the elected president was ousted by the powerful army on July 3 following mass protests against his regime.

Speaking to reporters in Rabaa senior Muslim Brotherhood leader Mohamed al-Beltagi lauded mass protests organized today in response to a call by the Alliance.

"After the iftar, the crowds would come in more numbers, and we would determine the peaceful means to reserve the bloody coup without resorting to violence as some might claim," he asserted.

CAIRO - Egypt's army gave the Muslim Brotherhood until Saturday afternoon to sign up to political reconciliation, a military official said on Thursday, after the army issued a veiled threat to use tougher tactics against the group.

"We will not initiate any move, but will definitely react harshly against any calls for violence or black terrorism from Brotherhood leaders or their supporters. We pledge to protect peaceful protesters regardless of their affiliation," the official said, saying they had 48-hours to comply.

The army deposed President Mohamed Morsi, a Brotherhood politician, on July 3 and installed an interim administration that has set out a roadmap for a new political transition leading to parliamentary elections in about six months.

Earlier, the army signaled it would change its strategy for dealing with "violence and terrorism" after protests it has called on Friday. In a statement posted on a Facebook page affiliated to the army command, the military said it was ready to turn its guns on anyone involved in either.

Turkish state officials on Saturday harshly condemned the Egyptian army opening fire at anti-coup protesters in Cairo's Rab'a Al-Adaweya Square, killing hundreds and wounding thousands on Friday.

  66. Egypt’s interim leader gives green light for civilian arrests....

Egypt's interim President Adly Mansour has signed a decree giving the military the right to arrest civilians. The move has sparked fears of a further escalation of violence throughout the country.

The death toll from Saturday clashes between security forces and supporters of ousted president Mohamed Morsi has risen to at least 80, unnamed officials from Egypt’s health ministry told AP.

Two more people were killed on Sunday as violence broke out during the funerals for those who had lost their lives in the preceding days.

The deaths occurred in two separate incidents: one in the Suez Canal city of Port Said, where 28 people also reportedly sustained injuries, and the other in the town of Kafr el-Zayat in northern Egypt.

The figures have made Saturday the bloodiest day in Egypt since Morsi’s deposal, with the interim president’s office stating that it was "saddened" by the loss of life on such a large scale. The office added that any action taken by the military is carried out in the "context of terrorism."

President Mansour’s decree, which allows Prime Minister Hazem El-Beblawi to give the military power to arrest civilians, was announced in the government's official gazette on Sunday. The decision could lead to a major crackdown on both Brotherhood supporters and militants who have been attacking security forces in the Sinai Peninsula with renewed vigor, government officials say. .....http://rt.com/news/egypt-military-civilian-arrests-712/

  72. Morsi rejected Ashton's pressure to step down and recognize coup....

Morsi told Ashton that he would not abandon his constitutional legitimacy as Egypt's first democratically elected president in exchange for a "safe exit"
CAIRO (AA) – Deposed president Mohamed Morsi rejected pressure by EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton to tender his resignation, Muslim Brotherhood leader Mohamed al-Beltagi told Anadolu Agency on Tuesday.

"President Morsi rejected Ashton's attempts to pressure him into stepping down, resigning or accepting proposals that would have amounted to recognition of the military coup," he added.

Earlier on Tuesday, Ashton said she had met with Morsi, asserting that the ousted president was in good health and was being treated well.

The EU's top diplomat described the meeting as "frank, open and warm," adding that Morsi had access to newspapers and television.

Asked by AA if she felt Morsi was ready to accept the military-imposed status quo, Ashton declined to answer.

CAIRO, July 31 (Xinhua) -- German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle on Wednesday arrived in Cairo for a three-day visit, stepping up diplomatic efforts to resolve the political deadlock amid looming fresh bloodshed in the country.

According to state-run MENA news agency, Westerwelle is expected to discuss with Egyptian officials about the latest developments in Egypt and issues of mutual interest. He is also to meet Muslim Brotherhood leaders.

Westerwelle's visit comes in the framework of the European mediation efforts to bring all Egyptian political factions to the negotiation table.

77. Gespräche in Kairo: US-Vermittler erreicht erste Entspannung in Ägypten...

  79. Pro-Morsi protest camps in Cairo being cleared...

Egyptian security forces have begun clearing two protest camps in Cairo occupied by supporters of deposed President Mohammed Morsi.

Reports say 15 people have been killed as police cut off side streets and bursts of gunfire were heard.

Teargas is being fired and helicopters flew overhead as security forces moved on the camps in the east and west of the city.

The protesters want Mr Morsi, deposed by the military on 3 July, reinstated.

The interior ministry issued a statement saying security forces were taking "necessary measures" against the protest at the Rabaa al-Adawiya mosque in the east of Cairo and the protest in Nahda Square in the east.

The statement said a safe exit would be provided for protesters and they would not be pursued, "except those who are wanted by the prosecution".

The interior ministry is keen "not to shed any Egyptian blood", the statement went on.

Muslim Brotherhood TV, which is allied to the ousted president, called for people to send cars to the sit-ins to take casualties to hospital.

Protesters have been camped outside the mosque, and at Nahda Square for the past six weeks.

More than 250 people have been killed in clashes since then.

On Tuesday, one person was killed in a confrontation between supporters and opponents of Mr Morsi in Giza after people marched from Nahda Square to a nearby complex of government buildings to protest against the appointment of several military officers as provincial governors.

Several people were reportedly killed as security forces started an operation to clear pro-Morsi protesters who have been camped out on the streets of Cairo since the Egyptian president was deposed by the military last month.

On Wednesday, live footage from Cairo showed smoke engulfing Nahda square and there were reports of tear gas and birdshot being used on supporters of the ex-president Mohamed Morsi, who was removed from power on July 3.

Bulldozers were said to have been used to uproot the camps, and the army sealed off roads leading to Nahda.

CAIRO - Egypt declared a month-long state of emergency Wednesday as violence raged across the country following a crackdown on supporters of ousted president Mohamed Morsi.

The nationwide state of emergency will begin at 4pm (1400 GMT), the presidency said in a statement read out on state television.

The exceptional measures came as "the security and order of the nation face danger due to deliberate sabotage, and attacks on public and private buildings and the loss of life by extremist groups," the presidency said.

Interim president Adly Mansour "has tasked the armed forces, in cooperation with the police, to take all necessary measures to maintain security and order and to protect public and private property and the lives of citizens."

CAIRO - The Egyptian government has decided to dissolve the Muslim Brotherhood as a registered non-governmental organisation, the state-run Al-Akhbar newspaper reported on Friday, adding that the decision would be announced next week.

"The minister's decision has in fact been issued but it will be announced at the start of next week in a press conference," Al-Akhbar quoted Hany Mahana, spokesman for the minister of social solidarity, as saying.

The decision applies to the NGO that was formally registered by the Brotherhood in March in response to a lawsuit that argued the movement had no legal status. The Brotherhood was founded in 1928 and formally dissolved by Egypt's army rulers in 1954.

  87. 15 killed, over 80 wounded as Egypt protests turn violent – state TV...

Egyptian celebrations of the 40th anniversary of the Arab-Israeli War were marred by a fresh wave of violence, with 15 people killed and dozens wounded in clashes between police and supporters of ousted President Mohammed Morsi.

Egypt’s Health Ministry says at least 15 people were killed on Sunday across the nation. Most of the dead had gunshot wounds, security sources told Reuters. Eighty-six others sustained injuries, according to state TV.

In Cairo, Egyptian police fired tear gas to disperse pro-Morsi demonstrators as they marched towards Tahrir Square, where pro-army supporters gathered to celebrate the 1973 war anniversary. The tear gas and birdshots reportedly sent protesters running towards western Cairo’s Dokki neighborhood. Police chased demonstrators and beat them up before detaining them, a witness told AFP.

Clashes also erupted in the Garden City district in the center of the capital, where police fired tear gas and chased protesters along the Nile Corniche, forcing some demonstrators to jump into the water. Police boats were sent to retrieve protesters.

Unrest was reported in other parts of Cairo and in several other cities, including Alexandria, Aswan, and Suez. Earlier on Sunday, a pro-Morsi supporter was killed and at least two people were injured after clashes with police erupted during a protest march in the town of Delga, located 300 kilometers south of the capital.....http://rt.com/news/egypt-clashes-cairo-morsi-808/

At least 44 people were killed and more than 246 wounded on Sunday as Egyptian security forces clashed with supporters of ousted former President Mohammad Mursi, security and television sources said.

Supporters of Mursi and his Muslim Brotherhood were protesting in several cities to show their displeasure of the military’s overthrow of the former president, while thousands celebrated the country’s military victory on the anniversary of the 1973 Arab-Israeli war.

One eyewitness claimed that military vehicles were firing live rounds at Muslim Brotherhood supporters near Cairo’s Tahrir Square, according to Reuters.

Egypt's Rabaa deaths 'crime against humanity'.....Human Rights Watch says killings were planned at highest levels of government and calls for senior leaders to be probed....

A new report has alleged that the Egyptian security forces' killings of at least 1,000 protesters at the Rabaa al-Adawiya Square sit-in last year in Cairo "most likely amount to crimes against humanity".

The 195-page Human Rights Watch (HRW) report released on Tuesday found that Egyptian security forces "gunned down hundreds of unarmed protesters" when they moved in to disperse the sit-in on August 14.

The killings were "part of a policy to use lethal force against largely unarmed protesters on political grounds," HRW found, and resulted in "one of the world's largest killings of demonstrators in a single day in recent history".

HRW said that over a dozen senior Egyptian leaders should be investigated for their parts in the protesters' deaths, including Interior Minister Mohamed Ibrahim and current President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, who was defence minister at the time.

"This wasn’t merely a case of excessive force or poor training. It was a violent crackdown planned at the highest levels of the Egyptian government. Many of the same officials are still in power in Egypt, and have a lot to answer for," said Kenneth Roth, HRW’s executive director, in a statement.

Roth was denied entry into Egypt on Monday, along with another senior staff member, after being held at Cairo's international airport for 12 hours. They were on their way to Egypt to release the report.

Badr Abdel Atty, the Egyptian ministry of foreign affairs spokesperson, told Al Jazeera on Monday that the government would not comment on the report until it was officially released...................http://www.aljazeera.com/news/middleeast/2014/08/rabaa-deaths-crime-against-humanity-hrw-20148884531513947.html
