All eyes on Taksim as crowds start to gather for meeting at 7 pm

-
Crowds are gathering in Istanbul’s Taksim square on a call from the Taksim Solidarity Platform for a meeting at 7 p.m. following an all-day police intervention in central Istanbul.

The platform, an initiative organized to prevent a development project in Istanbul’s Taksim Gezi Park, has called on everyone to support the ongoing protest at Gezi Park.

The platform voiced its concerns over the police intervention at Taksim and Gezi Park today, saying that none of the protesters demands had been realized by now, in a statement posted on its Facebook page.

The protesters have discussed their concerns of police crackdown at 7 p.m., and the police assured them that no intervention was planned unless the protestors try to hand banners on the Atatürk statue and the AKM cultural center, or throw stones at police officials.

Meanwhile, 20 lawmakers of the main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP), includign deputy leaders Sezgin Tankrıkulu and Gürsel Tekin, will spend the night at Gezi Park with the protesters, the party has announced.

The Taksim Solidarity Platform reiterated its demands for the future of the Gezi Park asking the government to declare officially that “not even one square meter area of the Gezi Park will be concrete and will instead remain as a park.” The statement also demanded the “release of the people detained” in the protests, adding that law enforcement officers who escalated the violence should be investigated and removed from office.

“We will continue to protect our park and our squares, along with our citizens, until our demands are met,” said the statement.

On June 5, some members of the platform met with Deputy Prime Minister Bülent Arınç and conveyed their demands.
