The EU should not accept any Turkish threats against the
Republic of Cyprus, which will assume the rotating presidency of the
Council of the EU in the second half of 2012, Prime Minister of Poland
Donald Tusk has stressed.
Speaking on Wednesday during a press conference with President of
Cyprus Demetris Christofias in Nicosia, the Polish Prime Minister noted
that the Republic of Cyprus will assume the EU presidency as a member
state of the Union and will thus represent the whole Union.
Moreover, Tusk expressed hope that the Cyprus talks continue so that a
solution is found in Cyprus, which has been divided since the Turkish
invasion in 1974.
In his statements, President Christofias said that Turkish threats to
upgrade the so called state in the Turkish occupied areas of Cyprus as
well as its threats to freeze its relations with the EU during Cyprus`
six monthly rotating EU presidency, can not be accepted by the EU or the
international community.
The Cypriot President also said that Turkey should abide by
international law, otherwise, as he stressed, Ankara is not worthy to
have the status of a candidate country for accession to the EU.
