Several missiles struck the Tiyas airbase, also known as T4, near the city of Homs in the early hours of Monday, state news agency Sana said.
Details are still emerging and it is not clear who is responsible.
It follows international alarm over a suspected chemical attack on the "rebel"-held town of Douma.
The U.S. Pentagon said it was not conducting air strikes in Syria "at this time," formally denying the Syrian state television report.
When asked about the explosions, an Israeli spokeswoman declined to comment.
Israel has struck Syrian army locations many times in the course of the conflict, hitting convoys and bases of Iranian-backed militias that fight alongside Syrian President Bashar al Assad's forces.

According to Lebanon’s Al Mayadeen broadcaster, the missiles were coming from the Mediterranean Sea, through Lebanese airspace. Meanwhile, Al Masdar News is reporting that “unknown jets” have entered Syrian airspace from Lebanon, and is speculating that the jets could be Israeli. In response, the Syrian Air Defense system at Mezzeh Air Base was activated, the report added.

An informed source told Sputnik on Monday that the Syrian Air Defense Force shot down the missiles. "The Syrian Air Defense Force has destroyed a few missiles, which attacked the T-4 air base. The missiles fell in the vicinity of the airfield," the source said.

He also dismissed as sheer lies the Israeli claims that its attacks on T4 are due to the presence of the Iranian forces, noting that the real reason is that Tel Aviv is aware of the possibilities and quality of equipment used at the airbase and is attempting to wear off Damascus' capabilities by destructive moves, given the fact that the crisis in Syria is ending.
The source said that interception of 5 out of 8 missiles fired at T4 shows the defense capabilities of the airbase, adding that the Israeli fighter jets are no more willing to enter the Syrian airspace after an F-16 warplane was shot down by Syria over a month ago.
