A man detained after an explosion rocked New York's Port Authority, one of the city's busiest commuter hubs, this morning had a pipe bomb affixed to his body with Velcro and cable ties.
The suspect, who is in custody, was injured in the rush-hour incident while three people who were nearby have minor injuries.
The bus terminal was temporarily closed, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey said in a Twitter statement.
There was a stampede up the stairs to get out, Diego Fernandez, one of the commuters at Port Authority said.
New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio and President Donald Trump have been briefed on the incident, according to local media and the White House.
Mr de Blasio said the incident was "an attempted terrorist attack", and added that the suspect is believed to have acted alone.
A leading member of the NYPD identified the suspect as 27-year-old Akayed Ullah.
