Seven missed calls detected from missing Argentine submarine

The Argentinian Navy Saturday detected seven satellite calls made to different Navy bases from the ARA San Juan submarine, which disappeared on Nov. 15 in the South Atlantic with 44 crew members on board, but that these calls "did not manage to establish contact," official sources said.

According to a statement released Saturday by the Argentine Ministry of Defense, the calls did not link up with the Navy bases, but could indicate that the crew is trying to re-establish contact.

  1. The Argentine navy said late Saturday it had detected seven failed “satellite calls,” likely from the crew of a submarine that went missing earlier this week.

The defense ministry said the calls were likely from the crew of the ARA San Juan, and officials saw it as a sign the crew of 44 was trying to re-establish contact.

Submarines underwater can deploy to the surface a location beacon that can then emit emergency signals via satellite, according to a Reuters report. The navy said a U.S. company that specializes in satellite communications was involved in trying to help locate the signals, according to Reuters.
