A powerful 8.1 magnitude earthquake struck off the southern Mexico coast last night killing at least 15 people and triggering a tsunami.
The quake hit offshore in the Pacific about 120km southwest of the town of Tres Picos in far southern Chiapas state.
Three people were killed in the state, according to Governor Manuel Velasquez. He also said that two more people were killed in neighbouring Tabasco state.
Ten more bodies were found in the southern city of Juchitan.
"The death toll is 15 in all ... based on the figures from each state," the head of the disaster management agency, Ricardo de la Cruz, told TV station Milenio
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said the quake triggered a tsunami with the largest wave estimated at 0.7m.
A tsunami warning is in place for the coasts of Mexico, down through Central America into Guatemala, El Salvador, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Panama and Honduras, and as far south as Ecuador.
