Republican senators introduce bill to move embassy to Jerusalem

Three Republican senators on Tuesday introduced legislation to formally recognize Jerusalem as Israel's capital and relocate the US embassy there, a step President-elect Donald Trump has previously said he would support and that would likely meet fierce opposition.

Senators Ted Cruz, Marco Rubio, and Dean Heller introduced the Jerusalem Embassy and Recognition Act, which would withhold certain State Department funds until the embassy is relocated, based on the Jerusalem Embassy and Relocation Act, which called for moving the embassy to Jerusalem, passed in 1995 but never fulfilled.

“Jerusalem is the eternal capital of the Jewish state of Israel, and that's where America's embassy belongs,” Rubio said after the lawmakers unveiled the legislation. “It's time for Congress and the president-elect to eliminate the loophole that has allowed presidents in both parties to ignore US law and delay our embassy's rightful relocation to Jerusalem for over two decades.”

Previous US presidents have delayed implementing the 1995 law, but there are strong signs that Trump will break precedent on the issue.
