Steinmeier urges to continue talks on Turkey’s accession to EU

Germany believes it is necessary to continue negotiations between the European Union and Turkey on Ankara’s accession to the EU, German Foreign Minister, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, said on Tuesday following talks with his Turkish counterpart, Mevlut Cavusoglu.

"I know that there are those in the European Union who believe it will be useful not to push ahead with the negotiation process on Turkey’s accession to the union. I am personally opposed to stopping these negotiations," the German minister said. He added that "the criteria for joining the EU are not new.

Turkey is aware of them, and it is necessary to match them."
