Hurricane Otto Kills Four People in Costa Rica

At least four people were killed and 2,500 evacuated in Costa Rica as a result of the hurricane Otto, the country’s President Luis Guillermo Solis said on Friday.

“I regret to confirm a death of the fourth person as a result of the hurricane Otto,” Solis wrote on his Twitter page. He also said that 2,500 people had been evacuated, adding that helicopters from neighboring Panama had joined the search and rescue operation.

On Thursday, Costa Rica declared a state of emergency due to the hurricane.

Earlier this week, tropical storm Otto strengthened to become the seventh hurricane of the 2016 Atlantic hurricane season earlier this week, with sustained winds of up to 190 kilometers per hour (118 miles per hour).

According to the US National Hurricane Center, Otto has weakened to a tropical storm over Nicaragua and is expected to move to the Pacific Ocean in the upcoming hours.
