A strong earthquake with a magnitude of 6.5 shook central Italy on Saturday morning, days after two quakes rattled a region still rebuilding after a 6.2-magnitude earthquake in August leveled entire villages and killed 298 people.
The tremor struck at a relatively shallow depth of 10 kilometers, according to Italian newspaper La Repubblica.
The USGS said the epicenter was 68 kilometers east southeast of Perugia.
The Basilica of St. Benedict in Norcia, a town close to the epicenter, collapsed, according to Italian reports. Images aired by Italy's Sky News 24 showed monks on their knees praying silently in front of the outdoor statue of St, Benedict while scared residents stood by.
According to Italian-language daily Corriere del Ticino, Saturday's earthquake had the highest magnitude of any in Italy in decades, with the last 6.5 quake occurring in 1980. That tremor, in Irpinia, killed 2,914 people.
The quake set dogs barking in the largely-abandoned towns of Norcia, Castelsantagelo, Preci and Visso, where residents had left their homes to sleep in cars or moved to the coast following this week's quakes.
"Everything collapsed. I can see columns of smoke, it's a disaster, a disaster," Marco Rinaldi, the mayor of Ussita, one of the pretty mountain villages hit hardest by the last quake, told journalists.
"I was sleeping in my car, I saw hell break out," he was quoted as saying.
Italian President Sergio Mattarella who is currently on a diplomatic visit to Israel said that "These are sad moments for Italy. In August there were many casualties and many beautiful towns and homes were destroyed. We are committed at ensuring that a speedy recovery will be soon to follow this time."
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that Israel is willing to assist Italy in whatever it needs in the aftermath of the earthquake.
