The Italian opposition party Northern League (Lega Nord) is beginning a campaign to collect signatures for a referendum similar to the recent UK Brexit poll, the party leader, European Parliament member Matteo Salvini said on Friday.
"The Northern League will begin collecting signatures for a bill that would allow Italians to express their opinion on the European agreements in a referendum, similar to that held in the UK", Salvini said.
He told TASS earlier that Brexit is "a response to the EU that fails to protect its citizens."
On Thursday, Britain held a referendum on the country’s exit from the European Union. After the votes cast at all of the 382 polling stations were counted those who would like the country to leave the European Union appeared to constitute a majority: 52% (17.41 million) voted for exit, while 48% (16.14) opposed it. British Prime Minister David Cameron said that after the euro-integration advocates lost he would tender his resignation.
